Updated 10-14-12 PLASTIC SURGERY: Is it for you?

Who is a Good Candidate for Cosmetic Surgery?

Before making an appointment to see a cosmetic surgeon, people should consider their motives for wanting to change how they look. Because cosmetic surgery can bring lasting and dramatic changes to the outside appearance, it is important to understand how these changes may affect people on the inside.

Many physical characteristics can be successfully changed through cosmetic surgery; others cannot. Good candidates for cosmetic surgery:

·        Have realistic expectations about what can be accomplished.

·        Understand the medical risks, physical effects during healing, how the surgery will affect them personally and professionally, what lifestyle changes may accompany the recovery period, and the expenses involved.

·        Have discussed their goals for surgery with their surgeon and resolved any questions.

·        Have diabetes or other chronic medical conditions under control.

·        Have no history of smoking or commit to abstain from smoking (including secondhand smoke) and nicotine products, including chewing tobacco and nicotine patches, gums or lozenges for six weeks before and after surgery.

·        Have had a stable weight for six months to one year.

Reasons to stop smoking if considering cosmetic surgery

·        Nicotine, carbon monoxide and other toxins decrease blood flow to the skin.

·        Smoking affects wound healing and worsens scarring.

·        Smoking increases the risk of post-anesthesia complications (pneumonia, blood clots, hypertension).

You are a good candidate for cosmetic surgery if :

You have a healthy lifestyle and understand the risks and limitations of cosmetic surgery. This means:

·        You're not overweight.

·        You get regular exercise.

·        You don't smoke.

·        You're emotionally stable.

·        You have friends who provide support.

·        You can limit your alcohol and caffeine intake.

·        You accept the disadvantages of cosmetic surgery -- cost, inconvenience, discomfort, and medical risk.

You may not be a good candidate for cosmetic surgery if :

You have serious health problems such as:

·        Diabetes

·        High blood pressure

·        A bleeding disorder

·        Heart or lung disease

·        Severe allergies

·        High cholesterol

·        Arthritis

·        Depression

If you're obese or you smoke or drink too much alcohol, you may not be a good candidate for cosmetic surgery.

Some surgeons insist that smokers quit for two to four weeks before surgery and not smoke for two to four weeks after surgery. This allows the body to heal properly. If you don't smoke, you should avoid secondhand smoke before and after surgery.

Your skin type and other unique characteristics should factor into your decision to have a cosmetic procedure. For example, skin resurfacing techniques work best on people with fair skin and light colored hair. People with thin and delicate nasal skin get the best results from nose surgery (rhinoplasty).

This list will help you determine if you are a good candidate for a specific facial cosmetic procedure:

·        Lip augmentation. You are a good candidate if you are young and want bigger lips or if you are older and your lips have thinned. You are not a good candidate if you have recently taken the acne drug Accutane or if you have one of these conditions: herpes, diabetes, an autoimmune disease like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, serious allergic reactions of any type. Also, you must accept the risk of allergic reaction to the implanted material.

·        Cheek implants. You are a good candidate if you have flat cheek bones or early sagging of the cheeks. You are not a good candidate if you have excess sagging of the skin, which is better treated with a facelift. Also, you must accept the risk that the implant could become infected, be rejected by your body, or shift to an abnormal position requiring more surgery.

·        Chin implant. You are a good candidate if you have a weak chin or if your chin is not balanced with your nose. You are not a good candidate if you have an abnormal dental bite that requires jaw realignment. Also, you must be able to accept the risk that the implant could become infected, be rejected by your body, or shift to an abnormal position requiring more surgery.

·        Forehead/brow lift. You are a good candidate if you have heavy eyebrows, deep forehead wrinkles, or frown lines. You are not a good candidate if you are balding or scar easily. Also, you must be able to accept the risk of losing your hair around the surgical area and the possibility of having some numbness in your forehead and scalp.

·        Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). You are a good candidate if you have droopy eyelids, bags, or puffiness around your eyes. You are not a good candidate if you have dark circles, fine lines, or crow's feet. Also, you must be able to accept the risk of blindness (extremely rare), dry eyes, visible scars, and eyelid "pulling" (which can cause eye irritation).

·        Nasal surgery (rhinoplasty). You are a good candidate if you have a large or crooked nose that is droopy or has a bump. You are not a good candidate if you have thick skin, are a child (not fully physically developed), or play contact sports. Also, you must be able to accept the possibility that in 15% to 20% of cases, additional surgery is needed for best results.

·        Face/neck lift (rhytidectomy). You are a good candidate if the skin and soft tissues on your face and neck sag with deep wrinkles, jowls, and a double chin. You are not a good candidate if your skin is not elastic and flexible or if you are significantly overweight. You must also accept that aging continues and be willing to accept the risk of skin loss, scarring, numbness, partial facial paralysis, or a change in hairline.

Remember, some of these procedures do not last forever. They won't stop the natural aging process. Think about whether you're at the right age for cosmetic surgery. For example, you can have a facelift in your 30s, but it may last only five or 10 years. Some people delay having a facelift until they are in their 40s or 50s, hoping to have only one procedure.

DONATELLA VERSACE

This is not something that the stars do anymore to fight the aging process or to enhance their looks.

Many men and women are opting for plastic surgery these days but there are always risks involved.

Remember, this is a surgical procedure.

I will be posting more botched cosmetic surgery photos as well as some with positive results;

just so as not to be a Debbie Downer.

People always love to criticize celebrities.

Shakira for instance, has been rumored to have had a nose job and her lips perked but you know what?

Make up, weight loss and the aging process all play a factor on how an individuals face develops.

Shakira is lovely no matter what. She lost her baby fat is all.

Then again, we have expert Photo Shop pranksters who can do things such as below to our celebrities.

Poor Meg Ryan

The apparent scar running along his hairline suggests a facelift or  browlift at the very least.

According to plastic surgeons they say that this type of forehead lift is designed to shorten the forehead and lift the eyebrows. The incision is in the hairline which I cannot see but perhaps you can see in the close up image. These incisions become less noticeable with time. This one looks relatively recent. His eyebrows should settle a bit too.

Maybe Sylvester Stallone has gotten himself some kind of epic facelift, not to say that his eyebrows were ridiculous.

There have been rumors about Stallone’snips and tucks for several years now. Perhaps he never had a full-on facelift, but he’s had something done, like a brow lift or something with the tightness of his jaw line. But those rumors haven’t stopped him from going under the knife again.

Here is an example of a great male eyelid augmentation and chin implant by Dr. Gerald Minniti.

It is subtle yet effective but you have to go to Beverly Hills CA. with a pocketful of cash.

I could definately see the changes and they do not appear to be normal aging.
It looks like Stallone was wearing very heavy makeup for the event below.

 See Below

It is said that  he looked slightly orange and his complexion seemed frozen.

Sly is 63-years old.  Not bad for his age. Not many wrinkles to be seen on his forehead with eyebrows arched either.

To me, he doesn't look bad in this photo but then again, I don't have to make out with a face full of man make up.  Yuck! Someone please pass me a hanky!

Brachioplasty (upper arms) Arm Contouring

Reasons for Considering an Arm Lift:

  • When arms look disproportionate to rest of body due to saggy upper arms.

  • Well-toned arms make you appear healthier and younger.

  • llows you to wear short-sleeved clothing.

  • Great boost for your self-confidence.

  •

Fatty upper arms are usually caused from the increased volume associated with weight gain. As you may know, fat in this area is difficult to lose. To make matters worse, your skin stretches to accommodate the increase in volume. So once you lose the weight, the skin of your upper arms often fails to tighten, causing sagging. The result is loose upper arm skin. The only way to improve this problem is to undergo an arm lift, also called brachioplasty.

Aurora, Colorado Doctor speaks of Possible Complications

1. How will my Plastic Surgery Group surgeon evaluate me for brachioplasty?

You should come to your initial consultation prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions you may have, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease. Your surgeon will want to know about previous surgeries, medical treatments and medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information.

How much you currently weigh and whether you plan to lose or gain weight in the future will be factors in evaluating you for a thigh lift. Your surgeon may ask you about the effects of prior weight loss on the appearance of your arms. He will assess the elasticity of your skin and determine the amount of tissue to be removed.

2. What will the surgery be like?

Actual Procedure done in the United Kingdom

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. You and your surgeon will have decided in advance whether intravenous sedation or general anesthesia will be used. For your safety during the operation, various monitors are used to check your heart, blood pressure, pulse and the amount of oxygen circulating in your blood.

When surgery is completed, you will be taken into a recovery area where you will continue to be closely monitored. There may be some discomfort, but this can be controlled by medication that you may continue taking at home.

You most likely will be permitted to go home after a few hours, although some patients may stay overnight in the surgical facility.

Arm lifts are sometimes combined with other procedures, and this can affect the amount of time the surgery takes. The incision used during an arm lift will leave some visible scarring along the inner arm. Many High End Plastic Surgery Group use the most up-to-date techniques to ensure the absolute minimum amount of scarring.

3. When can I resume normal activities?

You should be able to return to work around two weeks after surgery, but it will likely be necessary to restrict the movement of your arms for a longer period. It is important to follow the instructions of your surgeon in order to ensure a quick recovery. A compression garment will generally be worn for up to six weeks after the procedure.

4. How long will the results last?

The results of an arm lift should be permanent, as long as you maintain your post-operative weight.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Reasons for Considering an Abdominoplasty:

  • Remove excess fat from the abdomen that won’t respond to diet and exercise.

  • Tighten muscle that has been stretched from pregnancy.

  • Remove stretch-marked or “pruned” skin resulting from pregnancy.

  • To achieve a more flattering contour in order to wear more stylish clothes.

Tummy Tuck, also known as Abdominoplasty, is an operation that is designed to remove excess skin and fat from the mid and lower abdomen and at the same time, tightening the abdominal muscles. Unlike liposuction surgery which just removes fat, this operation addresses all three tissue components of a protruding abdomen: skin, fat, and muscle. For this reason, it is more extensive than liposuction. The best candidates are those in relatively good shape but are bothered by a large fat deposit, excess abdominal skin, and loose muscles that won’t respond to diet or exercise. The surgery is particularly helpful to women who have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal after pregnancy. Since the excess sagging and stretch-marked skin is removed, there is also improvement in skin quality. The overall result is a flatter, smoother, tighter mid-section.

1. How will my Plastic Surgery Group surgeon evaluate me for abdominoplasty?

Your surgeon may examine your abdomen while you are standing as well as lying down. Your skin tone and the amount of loose skin in the abdominal region will be assessed. Your surgeon also will evaluate the amount of excess fat in your abdomen and the condition of your abdominal muscles.

You should come to the consultation prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, pregnancies, previous surgeries and medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information.

2. What will the day of surgery be like?

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. A general anesthetic is administered, so that you will be asleep throughout the procedure. When surgery is completed, you will be taken into a recovery area where you will continue to be closely monitored. In most instances, small drain tubes will have been placed within the abdominal tissues to help avoid accumulation of fluids. Gauze or other dressings may be applied to your abdomen and covered with tape or an elastic bandage.

You can expect to stay overnight and possibly up to two days in an overnight facility or in the hospital.

3. When can I resume my normal activities?

It is important to realize that the amount of time it takes for recovery varies greatly among individuals. Depending on the extent of your abdominoplasty and your general physical condition, you may be able to return to non-strenuous work anywhere from two to four weeks after surgery. In many instances, you can resume most of your normal activities, including some form of mild exercise, after a few weeks. You may continue to experience some mild, periodic discomfort and swelling during this time, but such feelings are normal. Severe pain should be reported to your doctor.

Any sexual activity should be avoided for a minimum of two to three weeks, and your plastic surgeon may advise you to wait longer.

4. How long will the results last?

Unless you gain or lose a significant amount of weight or become pregnant, your abdomen should remain firmer and flatter for many years. However, gravity and the effects of aging will eventually take their toll. If, after a period of years, you again become dissatisfied with the appearance of your abdomen, you may choose to undergo a second procedure to restore a more youthful body contour.

Breast Augmentation

Augmentation Mammoplasty, also known as Breast Augmentation, is a surgical procedure in which implants are used to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breast. Breast augmentation can restore breast volume lost following pregnancy or weight loss, balance a difference in breast size to achieve better symmetry, or simply enhance the body contour of a woman who feels her breast size is too small.
While breast augmentation will enlarge the breasts, it will not alter basic defects in breast shape or form like sagging breasts, tubular breasts, or widely-spaced breasts. Major asymmetries may be improved, but will not be completely corrected. If breast size or nipple position asymmetries are severe then additional procedures to further improve symmetry may be necessary. No two breasts are identical, and even the most aesthetic breasts have small natural differences that should not be cause for concern. A breast augmentation procedure is best suited for women with realistic expectations who are looking for improvement and not perfection.
Breast Augmentation is not only one of the most commonly requested cosmetic surgical procedures world-wide, it also has the highest satisfaction rate among patients.

1. How will my Plastic Surgery Group surgeon evaluate me for breast augmentation surgery?

Your surgeon will examine your breasts and perhaps take photographs for your medical record. He will consider such factors as the size and shape of your breasts, the quality of your skin and the placement of your nipples and areolas (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipples). If your breasts are sagging, a breast lift may be recommended in conjunction with augmentation.

You should come to the consultation prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries including breast biopsies, and medications that you currently take. You will be asked whether you have a family history of breast cancer and about results of any mammograms. It is important for you to provide complete information.

There is no scientific evidence that breast augmentation increases the risk of breast cancer. The presence of breast implants, however, makes it more technically difficult to take and read mammograms. This may be a special consideration for women who perhaps are at higher risk for breast cancer because of their family history or other reasons. Placement of the implant underneath the pectoral muscle may interfere less with mammographic examination, but other factors may also need to be considered with regard to implant placement. Your plastic surgeon will discuss this with you.

If you are planning to lose a significant amount of weight, be sure to tell your plastic surgeon. He may recommend that you stabilize your weight prior to undergoing surgery.

If you think that you may want to become pregnant in the future, you should mention this to your surgeon. Pregnancy can alter breast size in an unpredictable way and could affect the long-term results of your breast augmentation. There is no evidence that breast implants will affect pregnancy or your ability to breast-feed, but if you have questions about these matters, you should ask your surgeon.

2. What should I expect on the day of the breast implant surgery?
Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. General anesthesia will be administered by an anesthesiologist and a pain pump may be inserted for your post-operative comfort.

When surgery is completed, you will be taken to a recovery area where you will continue to be closely monitored. Your breasts will be wrapped in gauze dressings or a surgical bra.

You may be permitted to go home after a few hours, unless you and your plastic surgeon have determined that you will stay in the hospital or surgical facility overnight.

3. Are breast implants safe?
It is extremely unlikely that an implant will rupture. Should this occur, saline implants do not pose any risk to your health. The saline is absorbed by the body. Under most circumstances the manufacturer will pay for new implants and contribute toward the surgery replacement costs.

4. How will my breasts look and feel after the breast implants have been placed?
A day or two after surgery, you should be up and about. Any dressings will be removed within several days, and you may be instructed to wear a support bra. Your surgeon will probably permit you to shower between three and seven days following surgery—this will depend on the specifics of your surgery. Sutures will be removed in about a week.

Some discoloration and swelling will occur initially, but this will disappear quickly. Most residual swelling will resolve within a month.

5. When can I resume my normal activities after my breast augmentation?
After breast augmentation surgery, it is often possible to return to work within just a few days or a week, depending on your job. Vigorous activities, especially arm movement, may be restricted for two to three weeks.

Sexual activity should be avoided for at least the first week following surgery. After that, care must be taken to be extremely gentle with your breasts for at least the next month.

6. How long will the results last after a breast augmentation?
Except in the event of implant deflation requiring surgical replacement with a new implant, the results of your breast augmentation surgery will be long lasting. However, gravity and the effects of aging will eventually alter the size and shape of virtually every woman's breasts. If, after a period of years, you become dissatisfied with the appearance of your breasts, you may choose to undergo a breast lift to restore their more youthful contour.

Deadly earthquakes hit south-west China

At least 43 people dead and 20,000 homes damaged in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces after series of quakes

A series of earthquakes hit south-west China on Friday, killing at least 43 people and damaging 20,000 homes, the government said.

The quakes, which ranged in magnitude from 4.8 to 5.6, struck agricultural areas of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. A spokesman for the Yunnan seismological bureau, Zhang Junwei, said the deaths occurred in Yiliang county, and that another 150 people were hurt.

A statement on the bureau's website said more than 100,000 people had been evacuated from their homes in Yunnan. The state-run China Central Television showed several hundred people crowded into a school athletic field in Yiliang's county seat. A black cloud of dust rose over the horizon, apparently from a landslide in a nearby valley.

The official Xinhua news agency said the provincial government had sent work teams to the quake-hit area and the civil affairs department was sending thousands of tents, blankets and coats. It said no casualties had been reported in Guizhou, but homes had been damaged or destroyed there.

As the number of dead climbed throughout the day, state media reported that Premier Wen Jiabao would travel to the area, as he has often done when disasters strike Chinese regions.
President Hu Jintao called for disaster relief to be dispatched to the area while attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in the Russian city of Vladivostok.

Buildings in rural areas in China are often poorly constructed. In 2008, a severe earthquake in Sichuan province, just north of Yunnan, killed nearly 90,000 people, with many of the deaths blamed on poorly built buildings including schools.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 5.6 quake hit at a depth of 6.1 miles. Shallower earthquakes often cause more damage than deeper ones.

An earthquake toppled houses in a mountainous part of south-west China, killing four people and injuring at least 100, state media have said.

Sunday's magnitude-5.7 quake was centred near the border of Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, where many of the Yi ethnic minority live, the official Xinhua News Agency reported on Monday.

It said the casualties occurred in Yunnan's Ninglang county and Sichuan's Yanyuan county, where many houses collapsed.

Rescue officials were sending tents, quilts and clothes to the affected area.

The US Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 5.5.

A magnitude-5.8 quake in Yunnan in March last year killed 25 people and damaged thousands of homes. The area is about 2,340km (1,450 miles) south-west of Beijing.

China's worst earthquake in recent years struck Sichuan province in May 2008 and registered magnitude 7.9. It left nearly 90,000 people dead or missing.

Earthquake Magnitude 6.1 - WNW of Nabire, Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A moderately strong earthquake has hit eastern Indonesia, causing panic among residents, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. No tsunami warning was issued.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the 6.1-magnitude quake struck Saturday evening off the eastern province of Papua. It says it was fairly shallow, just 14 kilometers (9 miles) beneath the sea, which often causes more shaking than deeper quakes.

Witnesses said shocked residents and hotel guests in Nabire town ran outside screaming.

Indonesia's meteorology and geophysics agency said there was no danger of a tsunami.

Indonesia has frequent earthquakes because of its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Storm clouds roll in over Busch Stadium as the St. Louis Cardinals prepare to take on the Milwaukee Brewers in a baseball game on Friday night.

Powerful storms rumbled across parts of the Midwest and the southern Plains late Friday evening, leaving a total of four people dead.

The storms left damaged homes, downed trees and thousands of power outages in their wake as they swept across Oklahoma, weather.com reported.

Two adults and an infant were found dead inside their destroyed mobile home after it was blown into a ravine in Nowata County, according to Doug Sonenburg, undersheriff of Nowata County.

The storms sent high winds through much of northeastern Oklahoma late Friday, causing road closures and evacuations in some areas.

Public Service Company of Oklahoma reported 17,790 customers without power, and at least 2,885 Oklahoma Gas and Electric customers were without electricity.

Tornado Strikes Beachfront Neighborhood in New York City

This photo shows a storm cloud over the Breezy Point area of Queens section of New York, on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012.

A tornado, once exceedingly rare in New York, swept out of the sea and hit a beachfront neighborhood in New York City on Saturday, hurling debris in the air, knocking out power and startling residents who once thought of twisters as a Midwestern phenomenon.

Firefighters were still assessing the damage, but no serious injuries were reported and the area affected by the storm appeared small.

Videos taken by bystanders showed a funnel cloud sucking up water, then sand, and then small pieces of buildings, as it moved through the Breezy Point section of the Rockaway peninsula in Queens.

Residents had advance notice. The National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning for Queens and Brooklyn at around 10:40 a.m. The storm took people by surprise anyway when it struck about 30 minutes later.

"I was showing videos of tornadoes to my 4-year-old on my phone, and two minutes later, it hit," said neighborhood resident Peter Maloney. "Just like they always say, it sounded like a train."

In the storm's wake, the community of seaside bungalows was littered with broken flower pots, knocked-down fences and smashed windows.

I (UnScene Tomorrow) am also a New Yorker who lived there for 40 years and I have to tell you that in all my years there, only once was a report of a small earthquake and nobody even so much as felt it and if they did, it was lighter than the EL (Elevated) train going by; a sound and trembling were had all grown accustomed to. As far as a tornado in New York, never! Hurricanes while I was there? Never!  Our planet is changing.  Mither nature seems to be regurgitating, fighting back for all the damages we have done to her.

And I say that, we are all in this together; at least,
